 Stormy Weather

and the importance of your Roof

The roofing material on your building will be challenged with the requirements of keeping out 100% of the weather, storms, and rain.

Heavy rain flooded parts of Courtenay on Vancouver Island on Monday.

Locally in Southwest B.C. and the Pacific Northwest, we have a "Rainforest" climate that vigorously and aggressively attacks our homes. Our "West-Coast" weather is unforgiving, and our homes require a strong defensive shield to keep out the moisture, the UV, the winds, the snow, and the rains.

To provide a good defence a building needs a good roofing system. Such a system requires good quality or high quality roofing materials. The "system" must include proper underlayments, flashings, vents, and proper detailing. It all must be assembled properly, using good roofing practices for your specific region's requirements, and must be done to the minimum of the manufacturer's specific instructions for installation, or to the local building code, whichever is greater.

Seems simple enough!

Thousands of condominium owners in the Lower Mainland, South-west B.C., as well as other areas in the Pacific Northwest, found out the hard way that not all structures are built equal, or weatherproofed adequately when built to the existing "Building Codes".

Don't forget that too many builders select sub-contractors based on low-bid.   This is a recipe for disaster unless stringent controls or specifications, and inspections of installations and materials, are in place. For your information, we believe there is generally inadequate levels of controls in the market at present.

Too often the builder asks the roofer to submit a price on a tile roof, or a "30"  year Laminated Shingle roof, and that is the end of the conversation relating to what the roofer is going to do. The job is won or lost on low bid, and as long as the home passes "inspection", many builders feel they have done their job.

This method of building homes may work in California where all they require is shade protection, but in this severe weather climate, it is not good enough.

Our Company believes in the philosophy of weatherproofing our buildings better than the minimum building code requirements. This includes better and best roofing material products, systems, and application method practices.

Often, for as little as the cost of a "plumbing fixture" upgrade, a better roofing system can be provided, or better roofing application methods can be used, to provide the 100% protection our homes require.

We all like to save money. That's why are Company strives to provide competitive prices on our roofing products. But there are thousands of homeowners out there who wish that a few dollars more were invested in building envelope and roofing systems to protect their homes and their investment.

An old saying is..."The best defence is a strong offence". Your best move to combat the weather is to create a strong weather-protecting roof system. To build a good line of defence for our homes or our building investments you will need not one line of defence (the primary roofing shingles, tiles, or membranes), but instead a multi-level "System". The system must include good underlayments, flashings, vents, metalwork, and detailing.

Our team at All Weather Products and "The Roofing Store" can help you design your best defensive system, for your building and its unique elements, within the budget framework you allow.

Another old proverb... "you get what you pay for" ... is not a lesson one wants to learn while the winter winds are blowing in our next severe rainstorm.

We are not saying to blow the bank on your roof. The architectural splendour that quality designer roofing materials can and will sizably contribute to the overall value of your home and its curb appeal and is worth the investment. But even if what your roof looks like may not matter to you, your roof is protecting all your other investments within your home or building, and it is not a wise decision to under-invest in your most important weather defence.
