Madera Tiles:

The Ultimate Shake Replacement

MonierLifetile's most realistic looking roofing tile with the appearance and realism of real wood shakes. Rustic charm, rugged beauty, real texture, all the warmth of natural wood, but with durability that lasts a lifetime.

This artisan crafted shake roof tile, with its random textures and subtly blended nuances of hue, so closely resembles weathered hand-split cedar shakes that the difference can only be discerned by touch.

These tiles look far better than the typical "shake tile" marketed by concrete tile manufacturers. The rustic and realistic texture depicting hand-split shakes will greatly enhance your new home design.

The investment is probably about $2 to $3 additional for an installed Madera roof ($6,000 to $10,000 more on a typical size home) compared to CHEAPER LOOKING, over-used typical concrete shake tiles. But the payback is the unique architectural up-grade to your home design that may add a huge selling feature and market value up-tick on your project.

Strong, standard weight for tiles, Madera shake tiles can be easily installed without too much structural reinforcement. They provide Class A fire resistance, CSA and UL approvals, as well as warranted protection from the severest of storms.

The beauty of this premium tile can substantially increase the aesthetic value of a home, yet, when prorated through its years of service, these tiles actually have a life cycle cost less than many other roofscapes.

Here in the West-Coast of North America, cedar shakes and shingles have been the most prominent and well accepted architectural look for our homes for decades. Unfortunately cedar shakes have severely escalated in cost in the past decade due to dwindling raw material sources and the associated higher costs of cedar blocks as a result.  As well, the quality of and longevity of cedar shakes has been reducing due to younger (less natural preservatives and weaker wood structure) raw wood being utilized as a general rule. The result is cedar shakes do not last as long as they used to therefore making cedar a poor investment product in today's home building and re-roofing markets.

But no one can argue that the look of cedar is not a great architectural choice. To keep in theme with today's existing neighborhoods, with the older shake roofs the prominent feature among the area's homes, a replacement product for the wood shakes should still depict the look of real wood.

That is why Madera is such an ideal choice for new construction, as well as a possible product to consider for re-roofing old shake roofs if your structure will support the moderately heavier weight (contact a structural engineer for approval for re-roofing an existing roof.

Remember...40 to 70% of your home's street appeal and character is directly attributable to the roof style, colour, and texture.

Madera is light enough to use as a replacement for most homes that were engineered to support cedar shakes or shingles, with only slight carpentry to reinforce the trusses (get an engineers recommendation). Weighing in at about 9 lbs per square foot, these tiles are about 3 lbs per dquare foot heavier than wet cedar shakes installed on our homes now. Madera is about 20% lighter than typical standard weight concrete tiles used on new home construction every day in today's market.

NOW AVAILABLE:

Madera 700

Madera shake look tiles came from the moulds and style of the original shake look tile called CedarLite (600 lbs / sqr). The Cedarlite tiles were fabulous for re-roofing homes with cedar shakes on them, except in the Pacific Northwest and Southern BC they were a little light, and therefore fragile when subjected to heavy snow loads, or foot traffic to clean the roof. Now, Monier has created a 700 pound version of the Cedarlite tile, by making their normal Madera a little thinner, and therefore lighter. It is stronger to walk on than CedarLite, but it looks just as good. Madera 700 tiles are modeled after the highest quality   hand-split cedar shakes. These tiles were developed, along with Cedarlite 600, with a unique manufacturing process that gives such a realistic appearance, most would be hard pressed to tell the difference between it and real wood shakes. The colours and textures of these tiles vary just like real wood does, so the beauty is natural but with all the advantages of using concrete roof tile. They are Class A Fire Rated, Limited Lifetime Warranted by Monierlifetile with a Fully Transferable Non-Prorated Warranty. They do not curl, they do not burn, they do not rot, no insects can affect them ... they are a durable long lasting roofing material that adds striking beauty and curb appeal to any home or building. And they a lightweight, so they are an ideal choice for re-roofing.

Installation Details (both types):

Madera can be installed over a number of roof deck framing methods.

First, it can be installed over a solid plywood roof deck (normally 1/2") with a minimum of 4:12 slope. During re-roofing, the applicator clears away all the old cedar shakes and nails, then installs the new plywood assuring that all top horizontal laps are supported at joints with new 1 x 4 lumber where required to fill in gaps. This is typical of shake "conversions" to laminated shingles and the same procedures are to be followed during the re-sheeting phase. The addition of plywood well fastened to the trusses will add shear strength and lateral support that will upgrade the seismic resistance of the structure, and we recommend this method.

Alternatively, the applicator can fill in the gaps of the existing 1 x 4 wood strapping under the cedar shake roof with new 1 x 4 lumber to create a solid deck ready for the tiles and underlayments.

The underlayment is then installed consisting of a minimum of 30# Asphalt Felt along with associated flashings, saddles, and valley metals. The ultimate underlayment would be a Self-Adhered Membrane such as Winterguard HT SBS Peel & Stick membrane. The tiles are then screwed down through the underlayment using chalk lines to align the Madera rows horizontally, and the installer randomly side-laps the tiles so that vertical alignment is not discernable and has the appearance of real shakes or slate.

A second method is to install the Madera on horizontal 1x4 wood strapping, on a vertically counter-strapped plywood roof deck.

On new construction the applicator can install a tile underlayment such as Feltex roof tile underlayment,  Certainteed Winterguard underlayment, or a two-ply SBS fiberglass base sheet, directly over the plywood base sheathing, ( using good roofing practice, anti-ponding eave detailing, and ). Second the installer applies 1x2 lumber directly over the truss locations vertically (about 2ft on center), and then installs the 1 x4 wood straps at maximum 10" centers over the 1x2s. The CedarLite tiles can then be screwed directly to these straps aligning the tile to the top of each strap. The vertical side-laps are random to create the look of random width cedar shakes or slate.

On re-roofing applications the installer first clears away all the old cedar shakes and nails from the existing 1 x 4 wood strapping. Step two is to install 1/2" plywood over the existing 1x4s and ensure the plywood is properly fastened and supported at all top edges of each sheet. After an approved underlayment is installed the roof is ready for the flashings and tiles to be installed.

Alternatively, 1 x 2 vertical wood counter-battens are installed directly over the existing trusses (or rafters) and existing 1x4s rafters and a Feltex synthetic underlayment is draped over these new 1x2 battens. Then step three is to install new 1 x 4 wood straps at maximum 10" centers which will be used to screw the new Madera tiles to the building. These 1 x 4 wood straps help guide the roofer for top of tile alignment, they create a rain-screen venting and drainage system under the tiles, and they also serve as a "scaffold" for installation on steeper roof homes.

wpe3B.jpg (86557 bytes) wpe3D.jpg (111334 bytes) wpe41.jpg (98575 bytes)

A third method is to follow the first solid deck plywood or solid wood framing method, and then install a counter-batten system on top. This "rain-screen" method is one of the most time proven ways of building a leak free tile roof system for severe climate areas.

The Madera tiles are screwed (or nailed) into place following the manufacturer's recommended installation practices. Finally all hips and ridges are completed using wood hip and ridge supports, pressure-sensitive Peel and Stick Hip and Ridge sealer such as TRA Flexseal and or Flexvent, and the matching Madera Ridge shake look caps finalize the amazing appearance and performance of the Madera Ultimate Shake Replacement.

Our Company has more comprehensive installation information at our showroom sales center, and will gladly offer instruction and specifications for the Madera roof systems we sell.

We offer training and support for new installers of these and other quality MonierLifetile products.
