Landmark
"TL" Ultimate
... Super-Thick Shake-Look Luxury
Style
There is no equal to the
Landmark TL. As the thickest laminated shingle in
the industry, weighing in at 340 lbs per roofing square (100 sq
ft), this product is a triple thick laminated shingle that is incomparable.
This is the ideal choice for executive class neighborhoods,
particularly when re-roofing from cedar shakes and converting to an
asphalt shingle system. These super thick shingles deliver the
architectural appeal suitable for design controlled subdivisions and
developments.
Landmark "TL" is a tri-laminate shingle, with three layers of heavy duty fiberglass
shingles laminated together to create great texture and appeal
from an asphalt shingle.
When installed this product is as thick as real cedar shingles,
and as thick as some real slates.
Real shadows and depth are created with this shingle, not just
a faked look such as a 30 year
laminated shingle, with their faked shadow effects from granule
additions. Why have a painted on shadow effect when real executive class
wood-like texture is available with the Landmark "TL"
Ultimate ?!
This product provides real texture, real depth, and a real cedar
shingle or
shake appearance. It isn't faking it with shadow lines...it really is
thick.
The Landmark "TL" Ultimate should be called Landmark "Super-Thick Shakes"
as we have never seen a more realistic alternative to the real thing.
This product costs substantially less than the real thing, is less
fragile than the real thing, is installed cheaper than the real thing,
and weighs far less than the real thing. But it looks better than the
real thing in most cases, and it comes with a Limited Lifetime Warranty
from Certainteed as well as a Class A Fire Rating.
This product automatically comes with a copper granule added to its
surface granules, which is warranted to
prevent algae staining for 10 years. The copper oxide that washes out
from these granules is a worthwhile extra feature in our rainforest
climate for inhibiting algae growth.
As the shingle is extra thick, and is therefore tougher to cut, expect your roofer to charge
incrementally a little bit
more for the application and installation than he would for typical 30 or 40 year
laminates. But considering that a properly installed
Landmark "TL" Ultimate may be the last roof your home needs, seeing the roofer
around for a day extra shouldn't pose too much of an
inconvenience.
Keep in mind that when some roofers or salesmen inform you that "30
years" ..."is good enough" for warranty, they are only thinking of
selling you the cheapest available products on the market. That's all
"fine and dandy" if you only want a water-resistant cover over your home,
and the look of your home is unimportant to you. But you could also buy a tarp in many designer colours as well,
for even less cost, if that is how you look at your home...not a real
estate investment with potential for increasing value, but rather just a
shelter to stay out of the rain.
The roofing material appearance and texture is an extremely
noticeable part of the architecture of your home. You can greatly
cheapen your home's appeal and real estate value if you aren't careful
what you choose for the roofing material selection. If you have cedar on
your home now, a "30 year or 40 year" warranted shingle used as a
replacement for this old cedar will detract from the current appeal of
your home. Cedar shingles and cedar shakes have long been considered an
executive class choice in home design and have affected the appeal of
your home and your neighborhood.
Therefore if you do not want to lessen the curb appeal and
intrinsic value of your home and neighborhood, we suggest that you
convert your wood roof to no less than Landmark "TL" for its realistic
appeal. Alternative styles include Presidential Shakes (365 lbs per
square), Presidential "TL" Ultimate Shakes (485 lbs per square), or for
moderately
less texture and cost, the Landmark Premium (330lbs per square) Fiberglass
Laminated Shingles.
Compromise if you must, but remember it probably will effect
the real value of your home to cheap out and install thinner shingles.
Also many costs do not change on a roof. Plywood is a fixed cost. The
underlayments, flashings, metals, rooftop delivery, nails, disposal
bins, and ridge caps are all fixed costs. And the tear-off, disposal
costs, and plywood installation labour are all fixed costs while the
shingle application labour doesn't vary significantly regardless of what
thickness shingle is installed ( as a function of overall cost).
Therefore we suggest that you come on down to our showroom and let
our experienced roofing consultants on staff assist you in deciding what
should be the smartest choice for your project or home in your particular
neighborhood or region.
And as this product is expected to last over 50 years, please ensure
that you install adequate ventilation for both warranty purposes, and
the health of your home. The flashings should also be heavier than the
minimum code products as we need 50 years plus of metal flashing life
expectancy. Lets install better than average shingle underlayments to
make this luxurious roof survive the distance. Remember...the roof is
only as good as its weakest link.
For final finishing details, a super thick shingle such as the
Landmark TL Ultimate should include on the peaks, hips, and ridges no less
decorative "detailing" when selecting the ridge capping.
We recommend a minimum of Mountain Ridge10", or Ridgeglass 10" Shake Look
Ridge caps, be used on these thick shingles. Plain old 3-tab capping
would detract from the look and appeal of this roof and probably
ruin the effect these shingles were meant to deliver.
The ultimate capping solution is to use the above mentioned shake-look ridge caps installed directly over Ridge Vent units such as
TrimLine Rigid Vent to create a truly realistic shake look appeal and
texture. Ensure this is done on both the ridges and the hips for truly
exceptional architectural style !
Remember...the first thing you often notice on a wood shake
roof is the jagged rustic appearance of the taper-sawn ridge caps. We can
replicate this look, while providing good venting on the ridges, using
this Trim-Line Rigid Vent / Ridgeglass capping assembly. See our page dedicated to
ridge cap options or visit us in our showroom.
On the ridges, ridge vents provide lots of exhaust venting for the
home's attic to get rid of excess heat and moisture (with good intake
vents in the soffit). Therefore the roofer may not need as many static
vents (plastic roof vents) or Whirlybirds, etc while completing the
roof, and these ridge vents are not actually a whole lot of extra cost.
Remember...all shingle manufacturers require an appropriate amount of
vents installed or you may not have a valid warranty. And ridge vents
are part of the solution.
